I wonder how many graphic design positions there will be in the future. Canva andtools like it make anyone feel like a designer, like digital cameras made everyone feel like photographers. People don’t notice poorly lit, poorly processed photos and probably won’t realize they’re making junk with whatever AI graphic design apps come along. This means a creative, artistic graphic designer should be all the more valuable, but I’m not optimistic about that happening! Hopefully someone with agency experience will chime in to actually answer your question!

it depends on your priorities as a person and a creative. if it's stability, go for in-house/agency, but keep in mind that progression is kinda slow in this field and there's little to no room for creativity (depending on clients/team you work with). in terms of growth as a designer, i've learned so much working in an agency setting compared to in-house. there's less hand holding too in agencies because everything is fast paced so there's that :/ i'm lucky that our creative director doesn't mind us doing freelancing on the side. so yeah graphic design has its pros and cons and you really need to have the drive, discipline, and the right network* (like any other profession i guess) to progress.

If you’re hyper creative and breaking new ground, do whatever you need to do. Everyone else: Take classes in InDesign! You’ll find it much easier to work with, and other designers who come after you will be able to use your file. Almost every time a client asks me to update a restaurant menu, I have to start with rebuilding it. This actually is one of my favorite things to do, but it’s inefficient and clients shouldn’t have to be paying for it.

As a graphic designer, I’ve worker with clients that have forced me to use Gen AI. And I’m just sick of it. It’s soulless, it’s corporate, it’s lazy and just making a product for product’s sake. So now, I’m really trying to make art and designs that aren’t fully digital. I want my designs to feel more human and tactile. I’m going to start by collecting old magazines and buying a kit for cleanly cutting them off. I’m thinking of practicing collaging among other stuff. But also, I’m starting by trying not to judge my work so much and just embrace the imperfections of it. Hopefully, I get to a place where I’m proud of my work.

The occupation persists, the oppression persists, the torture persists. The occupiers are psychotic and their work is never finished. People who’ve paid attention won’t be surprised by this photo from Gaza.
