Iām new to the legend that is Jason Molina, having discovered him through the announcement of a tribute covers album dedicated to him. But I have fallen fast in love with his work. His songs can be seen as similar in tone to elliot smith, sparklehorse, sun kil moon. but molina has something so special about his songwriting and voice, he carries a depth of emotion like no other and creates such a mythical and visceral world through his songwriting. these songs have found a home in the shadowy weird vunerable corners of my southern gothic loving heart. must listen for anyone that like sad music or folk music or anything of the sort. now that iāve found him i will be keeping him close to my heart, and he will be inspiring my songwriting forever.
I am absolutely in love with this site. Better yet, I am very happy to see a lot of folks recommend music I have heard of or never listened to. I just wanted to put this out first before I go into a huge spiel. I am a huge fan of Jason Molinaās work, and every year, I take a listen to the majority of his catalogue works, from his solo, and two bands he created. What surprises me is that this is brutally honest music that havenāt reached a lot of people, but whatās great about this is when somebody knows who I am talking about, they get it. I wanted to share his music and promise whoever sees this that theyāre in for a treat. Jason Molina had the promise of making music now if he didnāt die so early. What he left behind were countless gems for people to discover and enjoy. You donāt go looking for Molinaās music. His music finds you.
Songs: Ohia. Magnolia Electric Co. Solo.
Prolific songwriter who blended indie rock, blues, country, Americana and other sub genres of rock to create his unique sound.
Thereās no wrong place to start with his discography but some of my favorite tracks are: O! Grace (amazing sax solo), The Dark Donāt Hide It (gritty), all of āDidnāt It Rainā (last three tracks are a sad beautiful journey), Lioness (for the romantics), Alone With The Owl (you can really get a sense of how good his voice was here).
RIP 1973 - 2013
Caleb Landry Jones, who is best known for his electrifying performances as an actor may be one of the most interesting current musicians working. I had the pleasure of seeing his perform at The Sultan Room the other night, and it was unlike anything Iād ever seen. His physicality as he performed was animalistic, almost vaudeville-esque. It felt almost as if the music was possessing him, guiding his body into these grotesque shapes. Him and his 11 piece band were so in tune with each other; it was absolutely transfixing & phenomenal. His fourth studio album, āHey Gary, Hey Dawn,ā released by the label Sacred Bones (who also has Jim Jarmuschās project SQĆRL on their roster), will be out this Friday and I highly recommend everyone checks it out. I have his two most recent singles off that album linked above.
